The Good Book
Journal Entry Dream Date: 2/8/13
Some close friends and family members had read a really good book that was timely, filled with simple truth, and so refreshing that is changed their life, and they wanted me to read it too. I took the book and began to read it and just as it did with them, it changed my life. The book was so enjoyable and brought everyone who read it great joy and happiness. It had great examples of life and explained things in a simple joyous way. It was truly the “Good Book”.
Then I walked into the church I used to attend and selected to sit by a young man I had mentored from time to time. He was sitting with his face to the wall, staring at three unlit communion candles, which were about one foot directly in front of him. He didn’t acknowledge that I was there due to his complete concentration on his religious duties. As I scooted by him to take my seat, I knocked the communion candles over. I chuckled inside with the sight of the religious ritual being disrupted. However, he quickly set the candles back up, refocused his concentration and starred away. Then I noticed that he was holding the same book I was reading in his left hand.
Then the preacher began to teach out of the “Good Book”. In fact He had the whole church reading the same book. However, the more he spoke the less I recognized the book I had so enjoyed. I even questioned that he was reading the same book that I and my friends had just read. I said to myself “Who would want to read this book the way this man is teaching from it. He had taken away the simplistic message, all the joy, and the refreshing meaning away.”
Then I reached over to the man I had just sat down by and asked to look at the book. He gladly handed it to me. I just had to verify that this was the same book I had read. As I opened the cover, I immediately saw page after page of colorful, worldly material had been inserted into the original text. The pages were brightly colored, like that of the funny papers you get in the Sunday edition each week. Someone had added so much of their material to the “Good Book” that it had lost its ability to bring joy and refreshment to the reader. No one wanted to read it and there was no true joy among his congregation.
Then someone in leadership came up behind the man sitting beside me and poked him in the back and said, “Come with me.” Then the man in leadership pointed at the unlit communion candles and told me to sit there and watch the candles. As I continued to sat there and listened to the preacher preach about everything but the simple truths the “Good Book” has to offer, I saw why people had lost their joy. The meetings were no longer refreshing because they had left the simple truths. This man was preaching his own doctrine.
The Bible was given to mankind to instruct, refresh and bring great joy with its simple to understand and follow truths. When I say simple I don’t mean it in a disparaging way. Simple means easy to understand and follow. The Bible is filled with hundreds and hundreds of uplifting Psalms and promises which were given to mankind by Almighty God, so that we may prove out to be good, wise, fruitful servants of the most high God. To live out simple truths that aren’t burdensome. Jesus said, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life.” Oh what joy He is too!
Trust in the LORD with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the LORD and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your body
And refreshment to your bones. Pro 3:5-8
Holy Spirit is our teacher and will illuminate spiritual truths found in the text to anyone who is seeking truth. On the other hand, man has chosen to lean to his own understanding, which by adding his own doctrines to the Bible, has taken away the refreshment that only simple truths can bring to your life. Are you tired of the “Ten Steps to Prosperity”? How about “Twenty Things to Do To Get Victory Activated In You Life”? These kinds of teaching are burdensome. Try, try as we may we can’t live by the letter of the word. We must live by the Spirit and be led by the Spirit each day. In so doing you begin to sense a small river of living water flowing from you to others. Oh how we need it!
Years ago when first starting out on this walk, I found my personal, daily walk so fun and refreshing. However, when I attended church and heard the message given by the preacher, I often left depressed, sad and condemned. The message wasn’t God’s message for the people, but man’s perverted doctrine which had been added spoken.
All the additions to the simple truth of the Bible, read The Additions | Walking In the Supernatural have taken away the joy and refreshing message away. It is estimated that there are over 38,000 denominations in America alone. Each one of them believes differently from the others, which means they have added their understanding to the simple truth. There is only one truth and that is given to us by Holy Spirit.
Some years ago when studying about what true evangelism entails, I asked the Father what a church on every corner meant to Him. Immediately He responded with one word, “Division.” Then I asked, “What is theology to you?” He responded with, “It is man’s attempt to explain what he doesn’t understand.”
Your joy and refreshing will come from an intimate, live, active relationship with Jesus Christ and learning to see Him and all the wonder of His creation throughout each day of your life. As you take the focus away from yourself and begin to focus on the needs of others you will begin to sense a refreshing joy come into your soul. When you are kind to others and lend a hand, even a cup of water to who thirst, it is the same as giving it to Jesus Christ.
What if every church canceled one meeting a week? Each congregation was instructed not to come to church that day but instead take the money (they were going to give into the church system) and go find people in their family or community that need help and give it to them with no alternative motive but to help. No intent to grow their congregation whatsoever, just help people. What a difference it will make in the people who give of themselves to others, even more than the ones who receive. Some years ago, my wife and I volunteered to work in the needy children program in our city. We would box up food, along with some nice toys and take the goods to the needy family on our distribution list. This was our holiday fun event each Christmas. On one particular trip we took a large amount of toys and food to some kids who were were in the care of their grandmother due to their mother being in prison.
We parked in front of their house and I grabbed the bags of toys and began walking towards the house. The kids were excited to see us and came running out of the house directly at us. I was dismayed when the kids ran past me, and my booty of toys, and went to my wife which was caring some of the bags of groceries. The oldest child said, “Now that’s what I’m talking about!” Kids not interested in toys? What is this? I’d never seen such hungry kids. They wanted food more than toys? This really touched us. We didn’t know kids were going hungry in America.
We left there and went back to the administrator of the program and told her that this family needed more food that we brought to them. As it ended up we made another trip that day, taking more food to these hungry little souls. They even put the family on a weekly grocery program so they wouldn’t go hungry.
The feeling of giving and helping others brought such a warm, loving, joyous meaning to our lives. So, If you want refreshing and joy to return to your Christian walk, then find the heart of Jesus Christ and Father God and go help souls in your family and your own community. Take what’s in your power to do and put it in the hands of those in need.
What use is it, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but he has no works? Can that faith save him? and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and be filled,” and yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that? Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself. But someone may well say, “You have faith and I have works; show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works.” James 2:15-18
May it be so!
Thus says the LORD, “Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches; but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD who exercises lovingkindness, justice and righteousness on earth; for I delight in these things,” declares the LORD. Jer. 9:23-24
They shall abundantly utter the memory of thy great goodness, and shall sing of thy righteousness. The LORD [is] gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy. Ps, 145:7-8
Which executeth judgment for the oppressed: which giveth food to the hungry. The LORD looseth the prisoners: The LORD openeth [the eyes of] the blind: the LORD raiseth them that are bowed down: the LORD loveth the righteous:The LORD preserveth the strangers; he relieveth the fatherless and widow: but the way of the wicked he turneth upside down. Ps. 146:7-9
“And whoever in the name of a disciple gives to one of these little ones even a cup of cold water to drink, truly I
say to you, he shall not lose his reward.” Mat. 10:42
Therefore do not go on passing judgment before the time, but wait until the Lord comes who will both bring to light the things hidden in the darkness and disclose the motives of men’s hearts; and then each man’s praise will come to him from God. 1 Cor. 4:5 (note…in this verse darkness means the secret areas where you good deeds are hidden where only God can see them. It’s not an evil darkness at all.)
